THE WEB
by Emma Paulet

The web warps

when I exhale,

my soul escaping my nostrils,

my lips —

then I breathe it back

and it wails, wails, wails.

I have time —

all the time in this room —

to breathe

in and out,

in and out.

And you

(oh, you) —

you lie on

the floor

in your final exhalation;

you will breathe

no more.

Relieved?

I am, indeed —

this is exaltation,

but I will miss you

and your screams

when ennui descends.

You were my favourite foe,

dom, proctor, collector, boyfriend.
